COIDA letter of good standing: what it is and how to get it

Updated 26 Oct 2026 · 3 minute read

COIDA is the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act. If you have employees, you must register with the Compensation Fund and pay a yearly assessment. When you are up to date, you can get a letter of good standing.

Steps

  1. Register your business with the Compensation Fund (online, through the Department of Employment and Labour).
  2. Submit your yearly Return of Earnings (how much you paid your workers).
  3. Pay the assessment the Fund calculates.
  4. Download or request your letter of good standing.

Watch the expiry date

The letter has an end date, usually linked to the yearly cycle. A letter that expired one day before the closing date can make your bid non-responsive. Tender Sorted can remind you 30, 14, 7 and 1 days before it expires.

Questions

Do I need COIDA if I have no employees?

If you truly have no employees you may not need to register, but many tenders still ask for the letter. Read the tender and, if unsure, ask the contact person listed in it.

Rules and websites change. Always check the official source: Department of Employment and Labour.
