How to register on the CSD (Central Supplier Database)
Updated 26 Oct 2026 · 5 minute read
The Central Supplier Database (CSD) is National Treasury's list of businesses that can sell to government. If you are not on the CSD, most government departments, municipalities and state companies cannot pay you. Registration is free and done online.
What you need before you start
- Your company registration number (from CIPC), or your ID number if you are a sole trader
- Your SARS tax number
- Your business bank account details (the account must be in the business name)
- The ID numbers of all directors or members
- A cellphone number and email address you check every day
Steps
- Go to the CSD website (secure.csd.gov.za) and click Register.
- Create your login with your email and cellphone number. You will get a one-time PIN to confirm.
- Enter your business details: type of business, registration number, tax number and address.
- Add your directors or members and your bank account.
- Choose the goods and services you sell (commodities) and the areas you can deliver to.
- Submit. CSD checks your details with CIPC, SARS and your bank automatically.
- When it is done, you get a supplier number that starts with MAAA. Write it down. Tenders ask for it.
Keep it up to date
Your CSD profile must match reality on the day you bid: bank details, directors, tax status and B-BBEE level. Many bids are rejected because the CSD shows something old. Log in every few months and after any change in your business.
Common problems
- Bank verification fails: the account name must match the registered business name exactly.
- Tax status shows non-compliant: fix it on SARS eFiling first, then wait for CSD to update.
- Director ID does not verify: check for typing mistakes and that the person is listed at CIPC.

Questions
Does CSD registration cost money?
No. Registration on the Central Supplier Database is free. Be careful of anyone who charges you to do it, unless you choose to pay a consultant for their time.
How long does CSD registration take?
Filling in the form takes about an hour. Checks with CIPC, SARS and the bank usually finish within a few days.
What is a MAAA number?
It is your CSD supplier number. Government tenders and quotations ask for it, so keep it handy.
