How to get a SARS tax compliance status (TCS) PIN for tenders
Updated 26 Oct 2026 · 4 minute read
Every government tender checks that your business is up to date with SARS. Instead of a paper tax clearance certificate, SARS now gives you a Tax Compliance Status (TCS) PIN. The buyer uses the PIN to see your status online.
Steps on SARS eFiling
- Log in to SARS eFiling with your business profile.
- Open Tax Compliance Status (TCS) and choose Request.
- Choose Tender as the reason.
- SARS shows your status and gives you a PIN.
- Write the PIN on your bid forms, or print the TCS letter if the tender asks for it.
If you are not compliant
- Submit any missing tax returns (income tax, VAT, PAYE).
- Pay what you owe, or ask SARS for a payment arrangement.
- Check that your registered details at SARS are correct.
- Request the TCS again. Your CSD profile also updates from SARS, which can take a few days.
Tip
Check your tax status a week before every closing date, not on the last day. A status that changes to non-compliant after you submit can still cost you the tender.

Questions
Is a tax clearance certificate still needed?
Most buyers now use your Tax Compliance Status PIN or check your status on the CSD instead of a paper certificate. Follow what the tender document asks for.
How long is a TCS PIN valid?
The PIN lets the buyer see your current status when they check. If your status changes, they will see the new status, so stay compliant all the time.
